Harker Heights is located east of Killeen and has experienced more than 50% increase in population since the 2000 census. In 2013, the population estimate for Harker Heights was 28,169. Harker Heights is the fastest growing city in the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood metropolitan statistical area (MSA).
In response to the increased population, the city has also experienced record commercial growth. In 2008, the 650,000 square foot, 82 acre Market Heights shopping center opened for business at the intersection of FM 2410 and US Highway 190. This is the first upscale shopping center in the area and offers shoppers from Harker Heights, Killeen, Copperas Cove, and the surrounding area a variety of specialty shops, dining establishments, and banking facilities. Stores and businesses include Any Lab Test Now, AT&T Mobility, Bank of America, Chase Bank, Chick-fil-A, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, ECO Blue Spa & Salon, Firestone Complete Auto Care, First National Bank Texas, Fish City Grill, Five Guys Burgers & Fries, Fossum Dental Group, Genghis Grill - The Mongolian Stir Fry, H & R Block, Navy Federal Credit Union, Panda Express, Stetson Cigars, Target, Twin Liquors, U.S. Army Recruiting, Yo Yo's Yogurt, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Old Navy, and others. The center also features a state-of-the-art, 16 screen movie theater.
There are three elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school located in Harker Heights and are part of the Killeen Independent School District. There are also many education opportunities for adults in close proximity to Harker Heights and include Texas A&M University – Central Texas (TAMU-CT). Other colleges and universities in the area include Central Texas College, University of Phoenix, St Mary’s University, University of Maryland, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, and Temple Junior College.
In addition to the medical facilities offered by Fort Hood, Harker Heights citizens also have access to the Metroplex Health System, Scott & White Hospital, and numerous clinics.
